What size kiteboarding harness do I need (and which spreader bar)

Mystic Majestic Waist Harness 2026

Short answer: measure your waist at bellybutton height, not at your trouser waist. On Mystic's men's/unisex chart, 29"–33" is a S, 33"–35" a M, 35"–38" a L, 37"–41" a XL. The same row gives you the spreader bar: S takes a 240 or 280mm bar, M a 280mm, L a 280 or 320mm, XL a 320mm. Most Mystic harnesses do not include that bar.

Mystic men's and unisex chart

Printed as Mystic publishes it, with the bar column that comes with it:

Size Euro Waist (in) Waist (cm) Stealth or Ace bar
XXS 36–38 24"–28" 60–70 240mm
XS 40–42 26"–30" 67–77 240mm
S 44–46 29"–33" 75–84 240 or 280mm
M 48–50 33"–35" 82–91 280mm
L 50–52 35"–38" 89–96 280 or 320mm
XL 54–56 37"–41" 94–104 320mm
XXL 56–58 41"–45" 102–114 320mm

Mystic women's chart

Size Euro Waist (in) Waist (cm) Stealth Bar Gen 3
XS 34–36 24"–28" 60–70 240mm
S 36–38 27"–30" 68–76 240 or 280mm
M 38–40 29"–33" 74–84 280mm
L 40+ 32"–37" 82–94 280mm

The women's ladder is not the men's ladder shifted down — a women's M covers 29"–33", exactly the same inches as a men's S. Read the chart for the harness you are buying, not the size on your jeans.

The spreader bar is usually not in the box

This is the thing that catches people every week. Mystic's hardshell waist harnesses — the Majestic, Stealth, Gem and Warrior lines — list no spreader bar in the box. The entry, seat, windsurf and kids models do state that an Ace bar is included: Force, Passion, Recon, Star Hybrid Kids, Windsurf Racing and the Aviator seat harness.

If you are buying a hardshell, budget for the bar. Mystic sizes them 240, 280 and 320mm — the same numbers as the "24 / 28 / 32" column on the charts above, just in millimetres. As of this post: the Stealth Bar Gen 3 Freeride and Gen 3 Kite are about $168, the Gen 3 Surf about $192, and the Ace Bar Kite about $120.

Winging instead of kiting? The Universal Spreaderbar Wing (about $108) fits any harness with 25mm webbing and converts a kite or windsurf harness to winging with a sliding hook rated to 400 kg.

Honest limit: a waist measurement gets you the right size on paper, and torso length decides whether it is comfortable. Two riders with the same 34" waist can need different harnesses if one is long in the body and one is short — a harness that rides up into the ribs is usually a shape problem, not a size problem. Between two sizes, a hardshell waist harness generally holds better in the smaller one; a seat harness is better in the larger. And how a harness sits changes once you are hooked in and loaded, which no chart can show you. Send your waist measurement and your riding style to the gear advisor, and the full charts live on the harness sizing page.

What to buy

As of this post, from the harnesses collection: the Star Waist at about $264 is the widest size run we stock, XXS through XXL. The Warrior 2026 is about $360, the Majestic 2026 about $480, and the Stealth 2025 — the stiffest, most locked-in shell Mystic makes — about $636. Women's: the Dazzled about $336, the Gem BK 2026 about $504. Prefer a seat harness? The Aviator is about $216 and includes its Ace bar.

US orders over $100 ship free, and we do true size exchanges on unworn harnesses — so if the chart puts you between two sizes, order the one you think fits and swap it if it does not.

FAQ

Where exactly do I measure?

Waist circumference at bellybutton height, standing normally — not sucked in, and not at the waistband of your trousers, which usually sits lower. Measure where the harness will actually sit.

What spreader bar size do I need?

The one in your harness size's row. XXS and XS take 240mm, M takes 280mm, XL and XXL take 320mm, and S and L sit on a boundary between two. A bar that is too wide slides and bruises ribs; too narrow and the hook sits wrong.

Waist or seat harness?

Waist for most kiting and almost all freeride and big air — it gives more freedom to rotate and sits out of the way. Seat for riders with lower-back trouble, for beginners who get pulled forward a lot, and for anyone who wants the pull lower on the body. Seat harnesses are also the ones that tend to include a bar.
