North Midi foil board review: mid-length sizes by rider weight, and Midi vs Midi Pro

North Midi Foil Board 2025

Short answer: the North Midi is a mid-length foil board — long and narrow instead of short and wide — built to paddle up and pump onto foil early for light-wind winging, downwind and foil-assist. It comes in six sizes from 44 L (5'0") to 96 L (6'4"), and North sizes it three ways: by prone-surf rider weight, by intermediate-to-advanced wing rider weight, and by foil-assist rider weight. The chart is below; the 70 L 5'8" and 82 L 6'0" are the sizes most wingers end up on.

Sizes, volumes and North's rider weights

Midi size Volume Width Thickness Prone surf rider Int–adv wing rider Foil-assist rider
5'0" 44 L 18 in 3⅞ in under 85 kg (187 lb) — 75 kg (165 lb)
5'2" 52 L 18½ in 4¼ in over 95 kg (209 lb) — 85 kg (187 lb)
5'4" 60 L 19 in 4⅝ in — — 95 kg (209 lb)
5'8" 70 L 19½ in 5 in — under 60 kg (132 lb) 100 kg (220 lb)
6'0" 82 L 20 in 5⅜ in — under 70 kg (154 lb) 100 kg and up
6'4" 96 L 21 in 5¾ in — over 80 kg (176 lb) novice

Three things stand out. First, the Midi is narrow: 18 to 21 inches against the 22 to 29 inches of a Seek. Width is what you give up for the long waterline that gets a mid-length moving before the foil lifts. Second, the wing-rider column starts at the 70 L and runs to riders over 80 kg on the 96 L — North does not put wingers on the 44–60 L sizes, which are prone and foil-assist boards. Third, the foil-assist column runs the other way: a motor makes up for volume, so a 100 kg rider is fine on 70 L.

The Midi Pro is the 2027 step up: a progressive centre-V hull, a 5/5 for early takeoff, a longer size run that reaches 6'9", and a 2.4 GHz window in the deck so a Foil Drive remote keeps its signal. It does not publish a volume chart in the data we hold yet, so if you need a number to size by, the 2025 Midi chart above is the one to use. Both boards use the 90 mm DropBox track and ship with the mounting hardware; straps are separate on both.

Honest limit: a mid-length is a specialist shape. It is the right board for light wind, downwind runs and flat-water pumping, where the long waterline earns its keep. It is the wrong board for a first wing session — the narrow deck is harder to balance on than a Seek, and the 96 L 6'4" is the only size North marks as novice. Learn on a Seek or Seek Air, then add a Midi when the light days are the ones you are missing. The downwind-only Horizon, by comparison, runs 95 to 125 L in a narrower 17½–19 inch displacement hull.

What it costs

As of this post the 2025 Midi is on clearance at 20% off: $1,231 (5'0") to $1,519 (6'4"), every size in stock. The 2027 Midi Pro is listed on the product page in 5'9" to 6'9". Orders over $100 ship free in the US, and a board with a wing and a harness or wetsuit takes 10% off as a bundle.

FAQ

What size Midi for an 80 kg winger?

The 96 L 6'4" if you are intermediate; North's chart lists the 82 L 6'0" for wing riders under 70 kg and the 6'4" for over 80 kg. An advanced 80 kg rider who sinks a board happily can go 6'0".

Is the Midi good for beginners?

Only the 6'4". North marks that size novice for foil-assist and puts no wing rider under 60 kg on anything smaller than 70 L. A Seek is the easier first board.

Does a Midi need a different foil?

No. Any 90 mm-track mast fits the DropBox. For light-wind winging on a mid-length, a bigger front wing (North's MA1050v2 and up for most adults) does more for early lift than the board does.

Volume rules are on the wing sizing page; the gear advisor will size you from weight and level.
